SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The Public Safety Security & Events Training & Asset Recovery Sergeant will work within both the GRPS Public Safety team and GRPS Professional Learning team to ensure the smooth transition of training and professional learning. The position will require the employee to assist in the management of the facility, and ensuring that rooms and training spaces are prepared and ready for district and non-district use. The positon will support other event workers, and solve any issues that may arise. Overtime and additional hours including weekends, holidays, severe weather days, and other days as necessary. At times, the position will require the individual to work at various sites to support the work of the department. This positon reports to the onsite manager of GRPS University, GRPS Public Safety Lieutenant, and/or the Executive Director of Public Safety and School Security.

JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Patrol all areas, both inside and outside of the assigned site (i.e., hallways, parking lots, restrooms, locker room, cafeteria, etc.) to prevent vandalism, theft, rules and/or law violations, loitering or any other questionable activity.
- Politely address all persons entering the building, directing those with authorized entry to their destination and removing unauthorized persons.
- Assist with the loading and unloading of busses. Provide assistance to the bus drivers when requested.
- Identify those persons responsible for violations of school rules and regulations or laws.
- Report all safety hazards and unsafe conditions to the building administrators.
- Be familiar with the facility, administration, staff and students at the assigned site.
- Supervise officers and provide security at school athletic events, parent-teacher conferences, graduations and other school related functions as authorized and directed.
- Investigate and report on GRPS Incident Reports, all incidents related to security.
- Cooperate in every way possible with the police whenever they are on school property.
- Be aware of all radio traffic and limit radio communication to only that which is necessary and security related.
- Participate in training programs as requested.
- Cooperate with the school administration, staff, and students.
- Interact with co-workers, administration, students, parents and the community in positive, supportive and cooperative ways.
- Supervise other programs related to the Department of Public Safety as directed by the Executive Director of Public Safety and School Security.
- Assist in the preparation of quarterly and annual evaluations of officers.
- Create and maintain automated or manual logs of public safety communications activity.
- Access and enter sensitive data in local/state/national databases as necessary for investigative purposes.
- Provide leadership and supervision to the PC Asset Recovery Coordinator
- Welcome guest to include VIP and Executive staff for meeting and events.
- Ensure that all complaints are re-directed to the appropriate divisions.
- Enter and maintain files for persons or property pending apprehension/recovery.
- Maintain appropriate security and confidentiality of information created or encountered in the performance of assigned duties.
- Keep informed of departmental regulations, policies and procedures.
- Assist in providing on-the-job training for departmental staff and submit progress reports and evaluations on trainees.
- Maintain detailed evidence logs per departmental procedures.
- Enter data from public safety officers, and assigns incident numbers.
- Maintain data base of other law enforcement reports.
- Arrange for sound, AV, Computer and other services for the facility. Basic knowledge of AV, and sound equipment.
- Organize large scale events that are scheduled at the location to include working with various departments under the leadership of the Public Safety Supervisor.
- Provide back up to other Department of Public Safety divisions, and other related positions.
- Maintain a detailed record of office, department equipment and sign in/out sheets.
- Maintain knowledge of the districts crisis response teams and assist in maintaining an active call out list and records related to debriefing.
- Maintain district identification systems and machines.
- Assist other public safety department members with assignment as necessary.
- Interact with co-workers, administration, students, parents and the community in positive, supportive and cooperative ways.
- Maintain a detail inventory of all equipment of GRPS University and Public Safety equipment to include all tables, chairs, individual room inventory, kitchen inventory, public safety equipment, radios, etc.
- Manage the flow of guest into the appropriate training area, and ensure that areas are assigned appropriately.
- Ensure that unused area of building is secured at all times.
- Moving equipment, setting up of rooms, light cleaning, when required.
- Assist in the venting and identification of potential clients for external rental.
- Assist in the establishment and maintaining of a fee structure for external customers
- Understand district building use process, assist with the development, maintaining and notification users of approvals and denials of use.
- Assist with the development and maintaining of district athletic security schedules.
- Provide leadership and supervision to the PC Asset Recovery Coordinator as directed by the Executive Director of Public Safety or Designee.
- In-person and on-time attendance is mandatory.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Associate's degree and at least 3 years of successful office experience.
- Must be able to lift 40 lbs., ability to move tables and chairs.
- Must have a valid Michigan Drivers
- Ability to work flexible hours as needed
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Prior experience as a GRPS Public Safety Sergeant.
- Experience with rental agreements, fees, and procedures.
- Knowledge of geography for city of Grand Rapids and surrounding areas, and location of school district properties.
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience working with computers
- Working knowledge of Windows based programs (wordprocessing, spreadsheets, and database) and web pages.
