Unit:                         Professional Administrative Exempt

Salary:                      Determined by the district and a comprehensive benefits package

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

Plans, organizes, and supervises all assigned school nurses, licensed practical nurses and community health workers. Ensures appropriate supervision and case consultation for staff. The Nurse Supervisor is responsible for overseeing and supporting professional  development and supporting the completion of documents and training related to the health program implementation. Supervises within established program clinical quality standards and protocols.

JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Recruits, assigns, and supervises assigned staff (RN, LPN, Community Health Workers).
  • Supervises the activities of assigned staff (RN, LPN, Community Health Workers) who are engaged in planning and prioritizing care for students and schools, focusing on strategies that will promote optimal health.
  • Supervises office operations assuring adequate levels of staffing for quality clinical care.
  • Monitors clinical activity, staff productivity, and the efficiency and effectiveness of the services provided. Initiates process improvement studies in order to measure the outcomes and evaluate services. Makes recommendations to improve the quality of services provided.
  • Communicates and holds assigned staff accountable to policies/procedures. Provides leadership using effective organizational skills, systematic problem solving and communication skills (verbal/written).
  • Prepares, maintains, and submits reports as required. Maintains files and records. Ensures that required documentation for activities within areas of responsibility is performed in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Assesses the professional development needs of health service assigned staff (RN, LPN, Community Health Workers) and coordinates staff development with Director of School Health Programs.
  • Responsible for ensuring RN, LPN and Community Health Workers receive training and on-going professional development.
  • Assures assigned staff (RN, LPN, Community Health Workers) compliance with credentialing requirements.
  • Performs evaluations completed for assigned staff (RN, LPN, Community Health Workers) per employee contracts (RN and LPN) and Spectrum Health (Community Health Workers.)
  • Assumes a leadership role in reviewing nursing assessments, with student acuity rating and recommendations, to determine appropriate staffing to facilitate safe, quality patient care in a cost effective manner which meets district policies and program standards in the most cost effective manner.
  • Ensures that services are provided in accordance with state and Federal regulations, organizational policy, and accreditation / compliance requirements.
  • Provides input into the development, implementation, and evaluation of program goals with district and community partners. Prioritizes goals so that they are consistent with student health care/administration needs.
  • Acts as student advocate, crossing multidisciplinary lines to meet needs. Communicates, collaborates, networks with and acts as a consultant to other members of the team within and outside Grand Rapids Public Schools.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan.
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing required, Masters degree in Nursing preferred.
  • Three years recent, relevant clinical experience.
  • Effective written, verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Effective patient assessment skills.
  • Time management and organizational skills.
  • Self directed.
  • Independently mobile.
  • Ability to make quality, independent decisions.
  • Analytical and strong problem solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently under tight deadlines, high volumes and multiple interruptions.
  • Working knowledge of computers.
  • Ability to instruct and direct the work of others.
  • Maintenance of CPR and first aid certification.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to nursing practice in order to meet the needs of students.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse students, peers, parents, community and educational team.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, talk, hear (in a quiet or noisy environment). The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust/focus.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The noise level in the work environment is usually loud to moderate.

 

MENTAL FUNCTIONS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to compare, analyze, communicate both orally and in writing, copy, coordinate, instruct, compute, synthesize, evaluate, use interpersonal skills, compile and negotiate.
