High School Robotics Coach - First Robotics Competition (FRC)

JOB SUMMARY

Coaches may teach basic design and building concepts, programming fundamentals, and troubleshooting strategies.  

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Essential functions under the Americans with Disabilities Act may include any of the following duties, knowledge, and skills. Regular on time and in person attendance is an essential function of this job. Other essential functions may include, but are not limited to the following:

 

  • Supervise scholar teams through their strategy, design, build, and competition process.
  • Facilitate meetings at least 4 meetings a week during the build season January-April, although additional meetings may be needed to adequately prepare students for competitions. 
  • Facilitate meetings at least twice a month during the off-season (September – December, May) to provide students with opportunities for guided practice, teambuilding, and other program development needs.
  • Coordinate logistics for team meetings and competitions with district Robotics Program liaison.
  • Register and attend at least 2 FRC qualifier event with scholars.
  • Collaborate with District staff and robotics program liaison to purchase and maintain supplies, collect data for program evaluation, and provide feedback for program development.
  • Participate in trainings as needed to provide adequate support to students (may include summer opportunities).
  • Maintain responsive and timely communication during the summer to coordinate equipment purchases, recruitment efforts, and other activity related to the setup of teams.
  • Train scholars in safety and use of tools and equipment.
  • Other duties as required to support the school robotics team.

 

Schedule:

  • September through April.
  • Preseason runs September through the end of December.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Previous robotics or similar coaching preferred.
  • Bargaining unit members will be given first opportunity for position.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Able to coordinate scholar training sessions.
  • Ability to multitask and make independent decisions.
  • Able to develop working relationships with scholar, staff, parents, and community.
  • Able to conduct safety and training sessions related to using tools and equipment.
  • Assist in design, fabrication, testing and competing during robotics season.
  • Able to work with a diverse scholar’s population, and in an economically, culturally environment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, talk, and hear (in a quiet or noisy environment). The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust/focus.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Work is performed indoors.

MENTAL FUNCTIONS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to compare, analyze, communicate both orally and in writing, copy, coordinate, instruct, compute, synthesize, evaluate, use interpersonal skills, compile, and negotiate.
