REGISTERED NURSE (RN)

Department:  Community and Student Affairs         

Unit: Grand Rapids Educational Association (GREA)    

Salary: $44,916 - $74,296 and a comprehensive benefits package               

 

JOB SUMMARY

The nurse works in collaboration with other members of the educational and healthcare team to coordinate and provide health services to students to enable them to participate in the educational process. The nurse uses clinical judgment to assess and treat students’ illnesses and injuries. The school nurse may delegate and supervise support staff providing health services to students. The school nurse is a leader in health promotion and disease prevention and works to maintain a safe school environment.   

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Assesses and monitors physiological, psychological, and sociocultural needs of students, and the school community
  • Develops and maintains a written individualized healthcare plan for student health concerns that is consistent with the students’ changing needs/goals. The care plan is congruent with physician orders, district policies and procedures and legal mandates
  • Provides and/or delegates health services consistent with the written plan of care
  • Provides leadership to the school healthcare team using effective organizational skills, systematic problem solving and communication skills (verbal/written)
  • Establishes and maintains a comprehensive school health services program that is consistent with district healthcare standards
  • Documents nursing care/ education consistent with documentation guidelines and compiles accurate reports
  • Arranges and manages the physical setting of the health office
  • Delegates and supervises support staff to facilitate quality services in a cost-effective manner
  • Participates with others to develop, review, and revise protocols, procedures and guidelines related to the prevention and control of chronic health conditions and injuries and the maintenance of a healthy school environment
  • Collaborates with members of the school and community in the delivery of health and social services and utilizes knowledge of school-community health systems and resources to ensure access, continuity, coordination of these services
  • Participates with other nurses to develop and implement ongoing quality improvement activities
  • Maintains knowledge of current trends and development in the field by reading appropriate books, journals and other literature and attending related conferences or seminars
  • May visit homes of students to facilitate communication with those who have communication barriers or need an assessment of the home environment
  • Educates students, staff and others on health topics to promote health, maintain a safe environment, prevent disease, minimize the impact of disability
  • Demonostrates good attendance and punctuality
  • In-person and on-time attendance is mandatory
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing
  • Maintenance of yearly CPR certification

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Master’s degree in nursing
  • A minimum of one year of nursing experience
  • Experience with medically fragile children
  • Ability to speak and understand Spanish is desirable

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, talk, hear (in a quiet or noisy environment). Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust/focus.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud to moderate. Work is performed indoors although there will be required outdoor activities. The employee is directly responsible for the safety, well-being, and work output of students.

 

MENTAL FUNCTIONS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to compare, analyze, communicate both orally and in writing, copy, coordinate, instruct, compute, synthesize, evaluate, use interpersonal skills, compile, and negotiate.
