SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The Public Safety Officer/Security Officer works as a member of the school security services and building teams. The incumbent would assist the Sergeants and/or the building administration in investigating incidents at their assigned site. Also the incumbent is responsible for the safety and freedom from violence, and protection against theft and disruptions by all students, staff and visitors within the Grand Rapids Public Schools.

JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Patrol all areas, both inside and outside, of the assigned site (i.e., hallways, parking lots, restrooms, locker room, cafeteria, etc.) to prevent vandalism, theft, rules and/or law violations, loitering or any other questionable activity
- Politely challenge all persons entering the building, directing those with authorized entry to their destination and removing unauthorized persons
- Assist with the loading and unloading of busses. Provide assistance to the bus drivers whenever requested
- Identify those persons responsible for violations of school rules and regulations or laws
- Report all safety hazards and unsafe conditions to the building administrators
- Be familiar with the facility, administration, staff and students at the assigned site
- Provide security at school athletic events, parent-teacher conferences, graduations and other school related functions as authorized and directed
- Investigate and report, on G.R.P.S. Incident Reports, all incidents related to security
- Cooperate in every way possible with the Police whenever they are on school property
- Be alert of all radio traffic and limit radio communication to only that which is necessary and security related
- Participate in training programs as requested
- Cooperate with the school administration, staff, and students
- Interact with co-workers, administration, students, parents and the community in positive, supportive and cooperative ways.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATION:
- Associates degree or 60 credit hours
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree
- Prior experience working youth
- Bilingual communication skills, desirable

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear. The employee must be able lift and/or move up to 60 pounds, in order to remove individuals from a unsafe situation and must be able to move (drag) up 125 pounds.l Must be able to withstand extended exposure to all types of weather. Must be able to physically restrain individuals. Must be able to assist individuals with standing, transferring and walking. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The noise level in the work environment is usually loud to moderate. Work is performed indoors although there will be required outdoor activities. The employee is directly responsible for the safety, well-being and work output of students.
MENTAL FUNCTIONS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to compare, analyze, communicate both orally and in writing, copy, coordinate, instruct, compute, synthesize, evaluate, use interpersonal skills, compile and negotiate.
